Urban Uninique purification absorbents are the industry choice for longest bed life and toughest duties. Urban Uninique purification technology utilises metal salts specially engineered into robust granules to remove traces of contaminants from hydrocarbon gases and liquids. In particular, these absorbents are designed to remove a range of sulphur compounds, heavy metals and halides.
Urban Uninique purification are made-to-measure absorbent solutions that fit right, feel great and last the distance. They are widely used for natural gas sweetening to meet pipeline or liquefaction specifications and are designed to remove mercury and a range of sulphur compounds – most frequently hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) and carbonyl sulphide (COS). Within an oil refinery, Urban Uninique purification solutions are used to purify hydrocarbon feeds for motor gasoline and aromatics production by removing sulphur and chloride-based impurities.

Sulphur (hydrogen sulphide or organo-sulphur compounds) removal is critical to prevent risks to health and the environment, improve process safety and operation, and to meet product specifications.
Hydrogen sulphide (H2S) is a very toxic and corrosive compound which needs to be removed from hydrocarbon and CO2 streams before they can be safely used by industry and homes. Upon the combustion of sulphur containing gas, sulphur dioxide can be formed which can lead to health (e.g. respiratory and cardiovascular disease) and environmental issues (e.g. acid rain). The corrosive nature of the H2S affects plant equipment and pipework, and along with organo-sulphurs species can cause downstream catalyst poisoning, costing industry billions of dollars per year in lost production.

The high toxicity of mercury and its ability to accumulate in the food chain can pose very significant and long-term damage to human health and the environment. Process equipment corrosion due to liquid metal embrittlement or alloying may cause catastrophic plant loss of containment.

Chlorides are highly corrosive species, affecting the integrity of plant equipment which in turn could cause significant plant failures and serious health and safety incidents.
In the context of an oil refinery, chlorides are present in the crude oil and in the outlet of the catalytic reformer. The latter is the more common source as chlorides are deliberately added to the reformer to achieve an optimal performance. Arsine (AsH₃), derivative of arsenic, is a flammable and explosive gas. The gas can travel along the ground, ignite a distance from source and flash back. It decomposes to arsenic at elevated temperatures. Arsenic and all its derivatives are highly toxic and lethal in high doses.

Our Unique absorbents have proven over the last two decades to be highly effective and selective for the removal of arsine from light liquid hydrocarbon streams. These streams commonly originate from cracking of heavy hydrocarbon streams such as FCC or olefin steam cracking.

COS (carbonyl sulphide) is gas which is naturally occurring or an off gas from chemical processing, natural gas and oil recovery, combustion of coal, biomass burning, etc. In high concentrations, COS can cause serious nervous system effects and acute respiratory failure. COS remains stable in air for many years eventually decomposing to sulphur oxides, which are known greenhouse gases.
